How to Budget Without Connecting Your Bank
A lot of budgeting apps will not start until you log into your bank. That is a hard stop for plenty of people, and it is not required to know what you can spend before the next payday.
PayAnchor works from numbers you type: take-home pay, how often you get paid, and the bills that come out of each check. Your cushion is take-home minus those bills. Your daily safe spend is that cushion divided by the days until the next paycheck. No bank login is part of that math.
What you need on paper
Three inputs are enough.
- Net pay for this paycheck, the amount that actually lands, not your hourly rate times a guess.
- Your pay schedule: weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly, plus the next pay date.
- Each bill's amount and when it is due, so it can sit on the paycheck that has to cover it.
If you already know your checking balance, you can type that too. Safe to spend can use the balance you enter. You are still the one deciding the number. The app is not pulling it.
What a bank connection changes
Connecting a bank, through Plaid, updates the checking balance used for safe to spend so you do not have to retype it. Plaid handles the bank login. PayAnchor does not store your bank password, and you can disconnect later.
The connection does not replace your bills or your pay schedule. Those are still yours to enter, because the bank does not know which debit is rent and which one is groceries. The difference between your bank balance and your cushion is why the balance alone is not a budget.
When to skip the connection
Skip it if you do not want another company in your bank login, if your pay is cash or a paper check, or if you just want to see the cushion before you decide. The free plan covers the paycheck, the bills, and the daily number either way.
The help page answers the bank question in short form: you can enter pay, bills, and a balance yourself, and connect only if you want automatic balance updates.
The same number, either way
With or without a bank, the question is the same. After the bills on this paycheck, what can you spend each day until the next one? Enter the check you just got at payanchor.app. You can add a bank later from Settings if you want the balance to update on its own.
